The key advantages of application overlay networks arise from the fundamental property that the overlay topology---residing above a densely connected IP-layer wide-area network---can be constructed at will, and manipulated to optimize performance. In this thesis, we consider the case of composing complex services in application overlay networks, such that elementary services may be federated and organized into service topologies . We seek to design a generic framework and an efficient algorithm towards such service federation, and to achieve the objective of optimizing end-to-end throughput by constructing service topologies of high quality. The highlight of the thesis is sFlow, a fully distributed algorithm to be executed on all service nodes, such that the federated service topology is resource efficient, performs well, and meets the demands of service consumers. To validate the effectiveness and efficiency of sFlow, we illustrate the results of evaluations in a wide variety of test scenarios over a global-scale wide-area overlay network testbed, PlanetLab.
